Notes

Notes and checklists that live outside the scene and go to the people you work with, with drawings made over the shot, frame by frame.

What it does

Notes and checklists

Write a note with a title, a body and a checklist. Tag it, give it a status and a priority, and link it to the scene, a file, frames and cameras. A tick is signed with who ticked it and when. Everything is saved as you type, outside the scene, so a note never travels inside a file you hand on.

Sent through a shared folder

Point it at a folder everyone can reach, a network drive or a synced folder, and send a note to anyone with an inbox there. New notes arrive on their own and are announced in the viewport. Reply, or send an update as a newer revision. No server and no accounts.

Draw over the shot

Draw over a camera's view with a stylus, using its pressure, tilt and eraser end, or with a mouse: pen, brush, marker, shapes, text, eraser and lasso. The drawing sits on the camera's resolution gate, so it lands on the same spot of the shot in any viewport at any size.

Frame by frame

A drawing holds for the frames you give it, with onion skins either side, and stays showing while you scrub and play. Drawings are kept in the note, so they go wherever it is sent.

Pins and exports

Pin a numbered annotation to a spot of a frame, with an arrow, and turn it into a checklist item with one click. Export the drawn frames as images, playblasted through the camera with the drawing painted over.

Better with Timeline++ and the File Browser

If you also have Timeline++, every timeline marks the selected note's frames and drawings, and a drawing's hold can be dragged there to change the frames it covers. If you have the File Browser, files with notes attached carry a mark. Both gain Notes entries in their right-click menus. This is optional. Everything else on this page works without them.

Honest about what it is not

This is a notes tool, not a production tracker. There is no server, no web page and no sign-in: notes travel as files through a shared folder, anyone who can read that folder can read them, and a note says who wrote it by their login name only. Draw-overs do not show in Maya's own playblasts, which is what Export is for, and a camera needs 2D Pan/Zoom off to be drawn over.
